How the SDHFC works PDF Print E-mail

The San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative (SDHFC) supports HIV/AIDS service providers in the San Diego region with funds raised from both local and national donors. These funds are combined with those raised through the annual AIDS Walk San Diego event and distributed via grant programs managed by the SDHFC.

Fundraising

Every year, the SDHFC holds a fundraising drive to meet a 2-to-1 challenge grant ($1 donated for every $2 raised) from the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The Elton John AIDS Foundation is one of several philanthropic organizations and businesses that provide financial resources to AIDS United (formerly the National AIDS Fund). In turn, AIDS United channels these funds to 29 community-based HIV/AIDS funding partners, including SDHFC. By leveraging funding from outside the San Diego area, AIDS United enables locally raised dollars to work harder. All decisions about how and where the funds should be spent are made at the community level.

Partnership with AIDS Walk San Diego

The San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative is proud to partner with AIDS Walk San Diego (AWSD) to improve the quality of life for thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS. Each year, thousands of San Diegans participate in AIDS Walk San Diego as walkers, runners, and volunteers. Managed by the San Diego LGBT Community Center, AWSD has raised over $7 million since 1989 for direct service providers in the San Diego region. For more information, please visit the AIDS Walk San Diego website.

The SDHFC Advisory Committee

The SDHFC Advisory Committee works with program staff to ensure that the program's work and funding resources are directed to strategically address the most critical needs of people living with HIV/AIDS in the San Diego region. The committee is comprised of  donors who contribute to SDHFC fundraising campaign and concerned community members. For a list of current members, please see SDHFC Advisory Committee.

Types of Grants

Funds raised each year are distributed to the community in three ways. The annual AWSD-SDHFC Community Grant program distributes most of the funds to the community based on priorities established annually (see below). Special initiative grants may be made from time to time to address specific, urgent needs in the community that may not be adequately addressed through the annual competitive grant program. Finally, emergency grants may be available to service providers.

For information on how to apply for these grants, please see How to Apply for a Grant.

Establishing Priorities

Funding priorities are established each year based on current epidemiology reports, available consumer needs assessments, service provider assessments, as well as anticipated public funding and challenges projected for the next granting period. This process ensures that funds are directed to strategic areas of need and where these dollars can make the greatest impact.
