San Diego LGBT Community Center

The Center, Hillcrest, San DiegoMission
To enhance and sustain the health and well-being of the LGBT and HIV communities by providing activities, services and programs that create community, empower community members, provide essential resources, advocate for civil and human rights, and embrace, promote and support our cultural diversity.

SDHDF Grant Helped Fund: “You Are Not Alone”
With the assistance of the BECAUSE Fund at SDHDF, The Center has been able to offer and grow “You Are Not Alone,” a support group free of charge for lesbian and bisexual women who are currently struggling to survive any form of cancer. The program provides a safe space for lesbian and bisexual women with cancer to seek support and therapeutic intervention as they manage not only the disease but the wide-ranging and often devastating impact it can have on their lives.

“The Women’s Cancer Support Group has given my partner, and me, by extension, the extraordinary gift of understanding and sustenance when we literally feared for her life.  While I have tried to give back to a community that has given me so very much, it pales in comparison with the heroism and grace of the women in those rooms—participants and providers both. I owe them more than I can possibly express and am grateful that I can continue to serve The Center and do all I can to make sure that the same services are available to anyone and everyone who needs them.” ~Andrea Villa
