“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” - Mahatma Gandhi, founder of the Indian Independence Movement, worldwide political and spiritual leader

Civil RightsAchieving equal treatment and securing our civil rights is the paramount issue facing San Diego’s LGBT community. This is the most dynamic frontier of human rights activism, and a wide spectrum of political, legal, social justice, and religious organizations are mobilized here in San Diego, and around the state and nation.

In 2008, San Diego Human Dignity Foundation’s Board authorized grant monies from our endowment to be used for the first time in the political arena to oppose Proposition 8. San Diego Human Dignity Foundation remains your steadfast partner in the struggle for LGBT equality in all spheres – economic, legal, political, medical, religious, and social.

One reason why we are particularly interested in strengthening civil rights advocacy and education in our local community is because the Gill Foundation recently concluded  that, outside of a few urbanized areas, cities like San Diego “lack a strong, viable LGBT civil rights infrastructure." * Whether at the ballot box, the Legislature, the workplace, in schools, social clubs or places of worship, San Diego Human Dignity Foundation provides financial support to organizations promoting LGBT tolerance and equal treatment.

Over the years, San Diego Human Dignity Foundation has invested resources and made grants to a number of organizations working in this area.
